An introduction to Research and Innovation at our hospitals

Research and innovation are central to advancing patient care at our hospitals. As a research-active institution, we’re committed to developing new treatments and improving healthcare delivery, ensuring patients benefit from the latest advancements in care.

Our researchers bring discoveries from lab to bedside, with early-stage clinical trials taking place at the MHRA-accredited NIHR Liverpool Clinical Research Facility based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

Our Research and Innovation teams support studies and ensure they meet strict ethical and governance standards. As part of the NHS, we protect patient privacy and ensure data is used responsibly and in the public interest.

Our mission

Our mission is to foster a culture of research and innovation by providing expert guidance, training, and infrastructure—ultimately driving progress and delivering better outcomes for all our patients.

Clinical research is essential to improving the care we provide at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital. It involves the systematic study of what works—and what doesn’t—in the treatment and management of disease and medical complications. By generating new knowledge, we aim to enhance the quality of care for our patients and all users of our services.

Our research spans a wide range of specialist areas, including maternity, gynaecology, neonatal care, fertility, genetics, miscarriage, urogynaecology, and cancer.
