A consultant at Aintree University Hospital who was told he had incurable prostate cancer has shared his remarkable story of recovery in a feature on ITV Granada.
Professor Kevin Mortimer, a Respiratory Consultant at Aintree, was just 48 years old and preparing to celebrate his daughter’s 11th birthday when he was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.
The diagnosis left him fearing he was doing many things for the last time. However, thanks to treatment provided by specialist cancer teams, Kevin’s cancer is now at an undetectable level just two years later.
Kevin received his diagnosis from colleagues at Aintree before undergoing treatment that included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a hormone drug called darolutamide. The combination, known as triple therapy, is a relatively new treatment option for eligible prostate cancer patients.
Today, Kevin has been described as a “super-responder” – a patient who has responded so well to treatment that no cancer can currently be detected in their body.
Speaking to ITV Granada, Kevin shared his experience in the hope of encouraging other men facing a prostate cancer diagnosis.
He said that while his diagnosis was devastating, advances in treatment and the care he received have given him renewed optimism for the future.
Kevin is now looking forward to celebrating many more milestones with his family, including many more birthdays with his daughter.
The feature also highlights the importance of early diagnosis, ongoing research and advances in cancer treatment, which are helping more patients achieve better outcomes than ever before.
