This year, the countdown to Christmas began a little differently for Rachel McAllister, Nurse for the Stroke service at Aintree University Hospital, as she received a special invitation to see the Christmas tree lights switch-on at 10 Downing Street.
Representing Aintree University Hospital and its Stroke Emergency Assessment Centre (SEAC), Rachel joined the Prime Minister, military personnel and other frontline workers for a celebration that recognised their dedication and service during one of the busiest times of the year.

The SEAC delivers specialist care to the region’s stroke patients, allowing them to bypass busy Emergency Departments and get the specialist care they need as quickly as possible.
Rachel was able to enjoy this unique experience with her nine-year-old son, Noah.
Reflecting on the day, Rachel said: “It was an incredible honour to represent Aintree and our Stroke team at such a prestigious event. This wasn’t just about switching on Christmas lights, it was about shining a light on the dedication and compassion of NHS staff who work tirelessly all year round.
“Experiencing this moment with Noah made it truly unforgettable, and it’s a memory we will both treasure forever.”
Last year, the SEAC took home the Excellence in Urgent and Emergency Care trophy at the NHS Parliamentary Awards, recognising the positive impact it has had for stroke care in our region.
