More than 200 local school and college students visited Aintree University Hospital to discover the wide range of career opportunities available within the NHS.

During the event, students met colleagues from hospitals across Liverpool and gained hands-on experience in patient care and the use of medical equipment.

Annette Beaumont, Apprenticeship and Widening Participation Lead for NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group, who organised the event, said:
“It was fantastic to see the students so engaged in the activities we had set up – from performing CPR on mannequins to caring for a lifelike simulated patient.

“This is the first of many taster days we plan to run, with the aim of inspiring the next generation of NHS staff. As one of the region’s largest employers, it’s important that we support local young people to achieve their full potential.”

Shaza, a student from Liverpool Life Sciences, said: “When you think about the NHS, you usually just think of doctors or nurses, but today I learned there are more than 350 different career opportunities in our local hospitals.

“I study health and social care as one of my GCSEs, and being able to ask questions to trained staff will really help me in my studies and in my ambition to become a cardiac surgeon.”

Hazel, a student from Archbishop Beck Catholic College, added: “I’m so glad I had the opportunity to visit Aintree today – it’s made me realise that I’d really like to work in the NHS. I’d encourage anyone who’s unsure about their future career to come along, listen, and ask questions.”
