Patients attending services at Axess Sexual Health clinics can now request to use The Sunflower Project, a kit of sensory tools available for those who feel overwhelmed in clinical settings.

The kit includes tools such as fidget toys, ear defenders and soothing lights which can be used to create a calming environment for those with sensory issues.

Introducing sensory tools into clinical environments can help to reduce stress and improve patient engagement.

The launch of The Sunflower Project coincides with Neurodiversity Celebration Week, which takes place between 16-20 March.

Martina Sheelan, Axess Sexual Health and Community HIV Outpatients Service Lead, said: "We are so proud to begin providing The Sunflower Project at our clinics.

“At Axess, we're always looking for ways we can innovate to make our service accessible and welcoming to all. We hope that the launch of The Sunflower Project will make our patients with sensory issues feel supported coming to our clinics."

Laura Rose, Axess Sexual Health Service Coordinator, said: "Everyone deserves to feel at ease when accessing sexual health services.

“Providing sensory equipment in all our clinics helps us to create a more welcoming environment for neurodiverse and anxious patients and reflects our commitment to delivering care that truly meets people where they are."

Patients who would like to use The Sunflower Project are encouraged to speak with Axess’ Reception Team upon arrival to clinic.
