The NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) is proud to celebrate a ground-breaking achievement by Amy Rawsthorne, a dental research nurse and a Research Champion.

Amy has become the first dental research nurse in the country to enrol on the University of Liverpool’s Master’s in Public Health programme via the INSIGHT initiative.

The two-year, part-time course covers a broad range of subjects, including generating and evaluating public health evidence, epidemiology, economics, and governance. This will equip Amy with advanced knowledge to help shape future healthcare strategies and improve patient outcomes.

Amy’s journey began with the INSIGHT Project, a regional initiative designed to support NHS staff in accessing postgraduate education opportunities. Through drop-in sessions and tailored advice, INSIGHT helps professionals identify the right programme for their career goals and provides guidance throughout the application process.

Amy said: I found my engagement with the INSIGHT Project to be very positive. The interview was a great experience. I’m grateful for the support of my managers and really looking forward to the next two years.”

Now 3 months into the programme, Amy is thriving and excited about the opportunities this qualification will bring, not only for her own development but for the wider research nursing community.

Amy also plays a key role as a Research Champion, supported by Professor Michelle Briggs, Clinical Professor of Nursing at the University of Liverpool and Director of Nursing (Research and Academic Development) at UHL Group.

Professor Briggs said: “Amy’s commitment to advancing her knowledge and skills is inspiring.

“Being the first dental research nurse in the country to join this programme demonstrates her leadership and passion for improving patient care through research. She is paving the way for others to follow.”

This landmark moment highlights UHL Group’s commitment to supporting staff in their professional development and fostering innovation in research and education.

Research Champions play a vital role in promoting research across our organisation, supporting colleagues, and helping shape the future of patient care.
