A formal Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with 22 Multi Role Medical Regiment, marking a big step forward in strengthening how NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group work with Defence colleagues.
22 Multi-Role Medical Regiment (MMR) is one of two British Army’s MMR and is located at Dale Barracks, Chester, with their sister MMR (21 MMR) being based in York.
The agreement is designed to create a clear framework for military personnel who wish to take up clinical placements across our hospitals. It will support colleagues in maintaining and developing the skills they need for both NHS and military practice and bring additional clinical capacity and specialist expertise into our services.
The partnership reflects UHL Group’s wider commitment to the Armed Forces Community and comes after LUHFT achieved gold standard reaccreditation under the Military of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) for a further five years. Placement opportunities are currently available across Aintree, Broadgreen and the Royal Liverpool hospitals, and as the programme grows, is expected to expand to include Liverpool Women’s and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.
The MoU was signed by Lt Col Adam Taylor and Heather Barnett, Group Chief People Officer at UHL Group. Lt Col Taylor began his career as a physiotherapist in the NHS before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps, and has since held a range of clinical, command and operational roles across the Armed Forces, including deployments overseas and senior positions supporting medical planning for Army operations.
Heather said: “This agreement reflects our commitment to strengthening collaboration with Defence partners and supporting the development of military clinicians within the NHS. We are proud to have developed this partnership and look forward to the benefits it will bring for our patients, our services and the wider Armed Forces community.”
Adam added: “Signing this agreement creates new opportunities for our personnel to develop their clinical skills within an NHS environment. Working alongside colleagues across the UHL Group will not only enhance the care we can provide on deployment but also strengthen the shared commitment between Defence and the NHS to deliver outstanding healthcare for those we serve.”
