What was included in the NHS App phase 1?
Phase 1 of the NHS App was introduced by NHSE in 2018. It was rolled out to LUHFT and other hospitals in the University Hospitals Liverpool Group in October 2022, allowing our patients to:
- View and book some hospital appointments.
- View primary care appointments and repeat prescriptions.
What is included in the NHS App phase 2? Do I have to do anything?
Phase 2 of the NHS App will update automatically at 10am on 24th February 2026 and will allow our patients to:
- Receive push notifications and messages about their hospital Outpatient and Inpatient appointments via DrDoctor
- View outpatient appointment letters
When a patient is able to view letters digitally, and when it is safe to do so, LUHFT will turn off text appointment booking confirmations, and a patient will instead receive a push notification about the appointment on their phone. This may generate some additional calls to LUHFT which may be answered with reference to the talking points raised in this FAQ.
What does this look like for our patients?

What happens if a patient doesn’t want to use the NHS App or doesn’t have a smartphone?
If the patient has not signed up to the NHS App or does not have a smartphone, DrDoctor will maintain our existing processes which are:
- Appointment / TCI information sent via text message and email using DrDoctor.
- Patients receive secure link to access letters online
- Paper letters automatically sent if digital letters aren’t opened within 3 days
- Patients may opt back into paper letters at any time
- If the patient cannot access digital letters, LUHFT will automatically send paper letters
- As per current practice, paper letters will be sent if the patient doesn’t have a mobile phone
