Our Mission

The Major Capital Projects team leads the way in the Project Management and delivery of large-scale construction Projects across our sites and our partner sites. Our aim is to deliver state of the art Healthcare facilities to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients and staff alike, while maintaining a safe estate to allow all services to run without disruption.

About Our Department

The Major Capital Projects team is part of the NHS Estates and Facilities Division. We service all of our sites including Aintree, Royal, Broadgreen, and Liverpool Womens, as well as providing the same service to our partner sites such as the Walton Centre.

Our team of 2 manages multiple Project teams including Architects, Engineers and Main Contractors for projects varying from £1m to £100m + through all stages from inception to completion. A summary of the various stages is as follows:

Stage 1 – Inception/Brief

Identify a problem or service need – review various options appraisals to identify best solution, early stage programme and cost advice.

Stage 2 – Concept Design

Sketch designs to further the options appraisals and agree outline plan with the User Group – work up business cases to identify funding sources, work with architects, engineers and professional advisors to build up reliable information.

Stage 3 – Detailed Design

Finalise designs and engage with Construction Partner to review buildability and to finalise costings.

Stage 4/5 - Construction

Construction and commissioning stage.

Stage 6 – Post Completion

Manage the defect period post completion.

Project Overview

We work on a variety of different Projects including New Build facilities, refurbishments and core infrastructure services.

Projects completed within the last 3 years include for the £20m Aintree Stroke Emergency Assessment Centre and Vascular Theatre complex which was completed in 2023 with our Construction Partners at Tilbury Douglas.

At the Walton Centre we have completed Phase 1 of the £5m Operating Theatre re-modelling Project which was to upgrade Theatre 4&5 which were built in the 1990’s. Phases 2 and 3 will be completed over the next 2 years.

Over at the Liverpool Womens Hospital on the back of the £15m investment in the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit and £5m investment in the new CT/MRI facility, a refurbishment exercise to complete an Ambulatory Unit is completing in 2025.

The £15m Aintree Tower Block has been completely overhauled with new cladding, windows and roof system installed alongside a new fontal elevation to the main and outpatients entrance. This was completed in partnership with BAM Construction, at the same time our first RAAC roof elimination Project was completed in former Coronary Care. This Project allowed us to replace the RAAC roof as part of a long term programme whilst creating an additional 7 Critical Care bed facility.

We are continuing with the RAAC roof elimination programme at the Aintree site with works to the new replacement kitchen and Ward 6 roof replacement works completing in 2025. We are working up the designs, methodology and costings for the next batch of RAAC elimination Project which link into our North Site re-development for Projects in 2025 to 2030. Below is an extract of a site control plan indicating draft future plans for the North Site at Aintree.

We are also working on the design for the proposed new Imaging Centre at the Aintree site. This is subject to a full business case process with NHS England in order to obtain funding to progress the Project and its enabling works. This is linked to the RAAC roof elimination programme and is an exciting prospect for the Aintree site.
