Our Mission

The Medical Engineering service is committed to improving the quality and value of healthcare services for the NHS and other customers. We aim to develop and improve the performance of our maintenance and repair facility and become the centre of expertise, knowledge, and excellence on matters of equipment management for UHLG and other customers, for the benefit of patients and public.


About Our Department

The Medical Engineering service, part of the NHS Estates and Facilities Division, operates across Aintree, Royal, Broadgreen, Walton Centre and the Liverpool Women's Hospital as the Trust's centralised medical device management and maintenance facility. Our team of 34 specialist staff members manages over 45,000 medical devices worth £100M, ensuring comprehensive support across all locations.


The current Estate and equipment of the service comprises the following:

  • A workshop and office facility in Bluebell House, Aintree
  • A workshop and office facility on level 3, Royal
  • A workshop on level 2, Royal
  • A workshop on level 1, Broadgreen
  • A workshop on level 2, Liverpool Women’s
  • A workshop on level 2, Walton Centre


All these workshops are fully resourced with specialised test equipment, appropriate tools, and a number of dedicated IT related devices.


Success Stories

The Medical Engineering department offers excellent career progression through training, professional development, and mentorship. Our commitment to growing talent has created pathways from entry-level to senior positions:

 

  • Elliot St John advanced from a trainee Band 6 engineer to a Band 7,  Deputy Site Manager at the Royal through dedication, aptitude and targeted training, now balancing the demands of the role.
  • Stephen Brewis progressed from a Band 3 trainee to Band 6 engineer, now specialising in maintaining critical anaesthetic equipment, recently winning Aintree Med Engineer of the Year.
  • Alessandra Sposato smoothly advanced from a Band 5 trainee to Band 6 Senior Engineer, a much valued and trusted key team member, specialising in maintaining complex and critical medical devices for the Royal and Broadgreen sites.
  • Thattiya Bowers started at Band 3 trainee and through specialised training and dedication is now a Band 6, maintaining a broad range of complex and critical medical devices for Aintree and the Walton Centre.

 

We provide comprehensive in-house and external training opportunities to develop skilled specialists. Our focus is on building an experienced team that delivers excellent in-house services. We value strong communication skills, patient-oriented approach, empathy, and enthusiasm for continuous learning.
