What is an ultrasound examination?

An ultrasound scan is a way of producing detailed pictures of the body using sound waves instead of X-rays. A doctor or a specially trained radiographer will carry this out.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

This procedure will allow us to look at a specific area within your breast to help us make a correct diagnosis and enable you to receive the correct treatment. The procedure is relatively quick and is painless.

What are the risks of this procedure?

There are no known risks associated with this procedure.

The examination

You will be asked to undress from the waist up in a changing cubicle and given a gown to wear and a basket for your clothes. There is no need to remove any jewellery. You will then be escorted into the ultrasound room.

You will lie on an examination couch. The doctor or radiographer will explain what happens and perform the examination. A small amount of gel will be spread over the breast being examined.

The examination may take up to 15 minutes.

After the examination

  • You will be able to get dressed and go home.
  • The report will be sent back to the doctor who requested the examination. This normally takes up to two weeks.
