In the lead-up to World Stroke Day 2025, Dr Nikhil Sharma, Stroke Consultant at Aintree University Hospital and Clinical Director for the North Mersey Stroke Service, is urging our communities to be aware of the signs of stroke, and how swift action can significantly improve the chances of a full recovery.

The three key symptoms to look out for are:

  1. Face – Has the face fallen on one side? Is the person unable to smile?
  2. Arms – Can they raise both arms and keep them raised?
  3. Speech – Is their speech slurred or are they struggling to communicate clearly?

Dr Sharma said: “If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to call 999 immediately. Time is critical when it comes to stroke. Every minute counts, with up to two million brain cells lost each minute. The sooner we can begin treatment, the better the chance of recovery.”

Aintree University Hospital is home to the award-winning Stroke Emergency Assessment Centre, a pioneering unit that bypasses the Emergency Department to deliver rapid, specialist stroke care and is the first of its kind in the UK.
