Clinical Pharmacology is the science of drugs, and therapeutics is the safe and effective use of medicines within healthcare.
Clinical pharmacologists are doctors who specialise in making sure that patients get the best medicines. Areas of training and expertise include: medicines optimisation (polypharmacy, pharmacogenomics), medicines management, clinical trials, education and training. They are often employed jointly by the NHS and universities.
What do we do?
Our main role is to treat patients by ensuring the safe and effective use of medicines, taking into account their medical conditions, symptoms, priorities and lifestyle.
We work with all specialties within the organisation as well as pharmacists and GPs across Merseyside to provide safer and better medicines for our patients.
More information
- Polypharmacy service – this service supports the care of people who take multiple long-term medicines
- Personalised medicine – we work with scientists and health professionals to develop the NHS genomics service to ensure that patients get the best medicines based on their genetics.
- Hypertension service – we run an outpatient service for patients with early onset hypertension, patients with ‘resistant’ or poorly controlled hypertension despite multiple antihypertensives; and to support patients with multiple drug intolerances to standard medicines. Patients with resistant hypertension are considered for renal artery denervation via our specialist input at the regional MDT alongside our partners at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. We also receive national referrals for patients with suspected Fluroquinolone Associated Disability (FQAD).
- Medicines management – we support pharmacy colleagues in ensuring that patients get the safest, most effective medicines. Our work includes the Medicines Clinical Effectiveness Group and the Medicines Safety and Optimisation Group.
- Acute medicine – we work within the Acute Medicine Directorate to support management of patients with multiple long-term health conditions and polypharmacy
- Heart failure MDT – we provide medicines optimisation support for people living with heart failure, renal failure and diabetes through a multi-specialist, multi-disciplinary virtual meeting.
