The great care of elderly patients on Broadgreen Hospital’s Reablement Assessment Hub (RAH) and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital’s Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit has been featured on BBC North West Tonight as part of a series focussing on the importance of living well for longer.
The series follows a report published on 23 June by the Northern Health Science Alliance into the ageing population in the North and measures that are being put in place across the region to help the population.
Since 2023, suitable patients have been able to bypass the Royal’s Emergency Department and have been treated on the SDEC unit. The unit provides rapid intervention for patients and currently discharges over 75% of patients home on the same day. By avoiding hospital admission, patients are less likely to acquire hospital infections and are at less risk of deconditioning. You can hear more about the benefits of the unit from Geriatric Consultant, Dr Alison Diack, in the coverage below.
At Broadgreen Hospital, the RAH takes a holistic approach to elderly care, including daily bed discos as well as activities such as darts, ping pong and Connect 4 that help patients’ mobility, socialisation skills and mental stimulation. Patients who are admitted to the ward are in need of a longer hospital stay but are encouraged to remain as active and independent as possible.
