Hospitals within the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG) have been awarded funding through the NIHR Strategic Funding Programme, to lead innovative healthcare and research initiatives in the North West.

Bringing research into everyday dental care

Professor Sondos Albadri, Professor in Paediatric Dentistry based at Liverpool Dental Hospital, is leading a pioneering project that will embed research-trained dental nurses directly into general dental practices.

This initiative aims to bring research closer to where most patients receive care—improving access to new treatments and the availability of research trials to improve the overall quality of dental services.

Professor Sondos Albadri said: “This funding will help us develop dental nurses to join our research delivery team and help link primary care dentistry across the North West.

“I am looking forward to growing oral and dental research and helping deliver many local and national studies.”

Empowering women through research and technology

At Liverpool Women’s University Hospital, research teams are enhancing the WHaM app, a health information platform available in over 75 languages. Led by Louise Hardman, Head of Research, the project will introduce new features to promote NIHR research studies, making it easier for women—especially those from ethnic minorities, non-English speakers and disadvantaged communities—to learn about and participate in research.

Collaborative research in Pharmacy

Rebecca Tangney, Lead Pharmacist at UHLG, has also secured strategic funding in collaboration with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Her project was selected from over 110 competitive bids, highlighting its potential to contribute significantly to ongoing research efforts.

These projects are part of a wider £1.7 million investment in 37 research initiatives across the region. The goal is to make health research more inclusive, accessible, and impactful for all communities.
