At University Hospitals of Liverpool Group keeping colleagues safe is a shared priority.
Our Personal Safety Training Offer supports staff who may experience challenging or aggressive situations as part of their role, helping build confidence, capability and safety at work.
Training is delivered by trust‑based IKON‑affiliated trainers, meaning sessions are grounded in a real understanding of our services, values and day‑to‑day working environments.

The Three-Tier Personal Safety Model
Our Personal Safety offer follows a three‑tier approach, designed to meet different staff needs across the organisation:
Tier 1 – Conflict Resolution
Completed online via Mandatory Training and required for all staff.
Tier 2 – Breakaway Training
A half‑day, face‑to‑face session for public‑facing roles, providing simple and effective techniques to safely disengage from aggressive situations. Breakaway sessions can be booked via the Electronic Staff Record (ESR). Full booking details can be found on ESR here.
Tier 3 – Managing Challenging Behaviour
A full‑day course for clinical staff, focusing on safely managing challenging behaviour during high‑stress or complex clinical scenarios. MCB Training is delivered on a bespoke basis for specific teams and is arranged following completion of Tier 2.
Bespoke Tier 2 and Tier 3 sessions can be arranged for teams (usually groups of 12+), with training tailored to individual working environments. This ensures sessions are responsive to the challenges staff face day to day.

What training looks like
Our Personal Safety sessions are practical, supportive and grounded in real workplace scenarios. Training focuses on early awareness, de‑escalation, and safe disengagement techniques, always aligned to trust values and compassionate care.
Sessions are interactive and delivered face‑to‑face, giving staff the opportunity to practise techniques in a safe and supportive environment.
