Liverpool Women’s University Hospital is the regional cancer centre for the treatment of women with a confirmed diagnosis of gynaecological cancer (endometrial, vulval, ovarian and cervical).

We work in conjunction with colleagues in all hospitals across Merseyside and Cheshire to ensure that women receive prompt access to appropriate treatment whether that is medical treatment or surgical treatment. Sometimes women will need treatment such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Liverpool Women’s is also a designated local cancer unit. Cancer units assess women referred with signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancers. We offer treatments for early stage cancers and precancers within the Liverpool area.

Urgent Suspected Cancer clinic

These clinics are multi-professional and are held throughout the week and sometimes at the weekend. Patient referrals will be triaged and allocated to a specific pathway. This may include a scan, a telephone assessment and/ or an appointment for an examination or biopsy (please see patient information leaflet for this clinic). These may take place over a couple of visits.

We aim to exclude or diagnose a cancer within 28 days. This may mean that appointments are provided at short notice. Please ensure we have your correct contact details so we can contact you promptly.

If you are diagnosed with a cancer or precancer following these investigations, you may be referred into the main oncology clinic.

MDTs

Prior to attending clinic, patients are often listed for a multi-disciplinary discussion and a recommendation/action plan is formulated. There are separate meetings for patients with early cancers, precancers or a suspicion of cancer and those who are diagnosed later stage or rare cancers. These meetings are held weekly and are supported by consultant surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, consultant medical and clinical oncologists, nurse consultants, clinical nurse specialists (CNS) for oncology and the cancer administration team.

If a patient requires MDT discussion, this should be requested by a clinician and will be triaged by the consultant team. If sufficient information is provided, the patient is listed for the next meeting. Occasionally, more information may be requested prior to discussion.

Oncology clinics

Our Trust is renowned for its treatment of gynaecological cancer and for its multi- disciplinary team of caring professionals who ensure that every patient receives the very best individual treatment and care plan. The outpatient clinics are held weekly at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital, Crown Street site to plan, assess and support women with a diagnosis of gynaecological cancer and follow-up treatment plan. The treatment option most appropriate for the patient is discussed with specialist consultants, sometimes in joint consultation, which allows individual treatment planning and ongoing assessment.

What will happen

This clinic is multi-professional. This means that you may need to discuss your care with more than one member of the team (e.g. doctors, nurses and other members of the team). The MDT meeting is held prior to main oncology clinic on a Wednesday morning. This may affect the running of the clinic and you may have to wait for longer than you expected. We will do our best to keep delays to a minimum and we will inform you of any delays during the clinic. Our priority is to meet the individual needs of every patient and family. Sometimes a longer consultation is needed. We appreciate your understanding and patience. The Specialist Oncology Clinic is held weekly.
