The Iron Deficiency Anaemia team care for people with anaemia caused by lack of iron.

This can happen if you lose blood or if your body is not able to absorb iron properly. Blood loss may occur from bleeding in the stomach or bowel, which can reduce the amount of iron stored in your body. Sometimes, iron levels become low because the body cannot absorb iron effectively, such as in certain digestive conditions or after some types of bowel surgery.

All patients are assessed by the Iron Deficiency Anaemia team to decide whether further tests or investigations are needed.

We are a nurse consultant led service with highly trained specialist nurses undertaking clinics on a daily basis.

All patients are seen as outpatients. However, if you are staying in hospital, your iron deficiency anaemia will be managed by your ward clinical team, or you may be referred to the Iron Deficiency Anaemia Service when you are discharged.

Our outpatient clinics run four days a week and offer both telephone and face‑to‑face appointments.

We are able to support patients with additional needs such as communication difficulties.
