The Honeysuckle team is the dedicated baby bereavement team at Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust.

The team provide care for women and their families at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital following pregnancy loss at any gestation and early neonatal death.

More information

Patients are offered a referral to the Honeysuckle team by the nurse, midwife or doctor caring for them if they experience miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, stillbirth or neonatal death at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital.

The team aim to contact any patients who are referred to them within 24 hours – this will usually be a face-to-face. Referrals made at the point of discharge will be contacted within five working days. Referrals are reviewed Monday to Friday.

Patients can also self refer to the Honeysuckle Team at any time by phoning 0151 702 4151 or emailing honeysuckle@lwh.nhs.uk

Holistic service, meaning care package for each patient differs in accordance with their needs.

Baby loss certificates are available for either parent following a loss pre-24 weeks gestation.

The certificates are provided (free of charge) to families to formally recognise the devastating impact of pregnancy loss. The certificates, which are not compulsory, are official but not legal documents. You cannot use them to claim benefits and they will not be added to your GP record.

Should you wish to request a baby loss certificate, please visit the Gov UK website.

Before you start

You will need:

  • Your NHS number or postcode registered with your GP
  • The mobile phone number or email address registered with your GP
  • Permission from the other parent and their email address, if you want their name on the certificate.

You can find out your NHS number on the NHS website

The Honeysuckle team’s specialist bereavement midwives run a monthly support group.

Group sessions take place in a calm, welcoming environment with refreshments, crafts and a listening ear for anyone affected by miscarriage, ectopic or molar pregnancy, termination of pregnancy for fetal anomaly, stillbirth and early neonatal death.

Please note we often take photographs and videos at our sessions for use on social media, on our website, and within other communication updates such as newsletters and magazines. Looking after your both physical and mental well being is important. The following links offer guidance and techniques for this.

The PABL Project has partnered with The Alder Centre in Liverpool to provide physio-led Pilates after Baby Loss classes for those who have experienced stillbirth, early infant death or pregnancy loss from 20-week – this includes termination of pregnancy for medical reasons within the last 12 months.

The classes focus on postpartum physical recovery plus emotional reconnection with your body and are trauma-informed and loss sensitive. An essential part of the classes is the time given to peer support over tea, coffee and cake after the session.

The classes are free to attend. They are held on Wednesday afternoons and run in blocks of six sessions. For your own safety and wellbeing, at the time of starting the classes, you need to be:

  • At least 6+ weeks post vaginal delivery
  • At least 10+ weeks post C-Section delivery
  • Have been told by a healthcare professional that you are safe to exercise.

You can refer to PABL classes on their website.

Each year to highlight and recognise Baby Loss Awareness Week, the Trust holds an annual Baby Loss Service of Remembrance. Baby Loss awareness Week aims to raise awareness around baby loss.
