Axess sexual health service, part of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group), is introducing support for an app which will help to bolster HIV prevention strategies in Liverpool, Knowsley, Warrington, Halton and Cheshire East by supporting people to keep track of their medication.

PrEP EmERGE is a free app which will improve patients’ uptake of PrEP – a medication which reduces the risk of getting HIV by 99% when taken as prescribed. The app works by providing secure access to data which can help users to track how and when they need to take their medication.

The app also securely connects patients to their sexual health records, offering simple access to test results, appointment details, medication reminders and PrEP usage tracking, all in one place.

PrEP EmERGE is the latest in a series of digital innovations intending to increase access to preventative HIV medication in areas served by axess. In late 2025, axess sexual health launched PrEPDirect, a digital service which delivers PrEP to patients without the need for an in-person consultation.

Initially launched by University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust in 2021, axess’ provision of PrEP EmERGE makes UHL Group only the third NHS organisation in the UK to adopt this new digital innovation.

Dr Martyn Wood, Speciality Clinical Director at axess sexual health, said:

"As we introduce PrEP EmERGE into the axess regional service, we’re taking an important step toward modernising how we support people using PrEP.

“This digital pathway gives our patients secure, convenient access to their results, appointments, and essential PrEP information, while offering practical tools that will help people to keep on top of their PrEP tablet taking.”

Patients who are currently on PrEP are encouraged to discuss PrEP EmERGE with their axess clinician.

You can download PrEP EmERGE from the Google Play Store and App Store.
