Gynaecology Emergency Department (GED)
The Gynaecology Emergency Department (GED) is a specialist A&E unit for women who need emergency care of an acute gynaecological problem (problems related to the female reproductive system) or self-referral of women having a problem in early pregnancy (up to 17 weeks and six days gestation), such as pain, bleeding or severe vomiting.
Attendance criteria
- If you have severe pain or heavy bleeding
- If you are concerned but you don’t feel it is an emergency, call 111 for further advice or see their GP to be assessed. Your case will be discussed with the on-call gynaecology team if required.
- If you are pregnant and less than 18 weeks gestation, have abdominal pain, or vaginal bleeding or any other symptoms of urgent concern.
EPAU
For non urgent pregnancy related concerns call EAPU on 0151 702 4469. The line is monitored Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm.
EPAU provides a nurse led outpatient care to women with problems or non urgent concerns in early pregnancy (6-12 weeks). The EPAU provides ultrasound scan appointments and arranges any further pregnancy monitoring if required

- Appointments are only provided following a telephone assessment.
- If you attend GED out of hours for an assessment and meet the criteria for EPAU you will be offered the next available appointment, Monday to Friday, 8am–3pm.
Maternity Assessment Unit
Pregnant women who are 18 weeks and beyond should attend the MAU if they experience any of the following:
- Reduced or changed baby movements
- Sudden, sharp, or ongoing abdominal pain
- Bleeding (if 20 weeks or more)
- Severe itching without a rash
- Headaches or dizziness
- Sudden swelling of hands or ankles
- Smelly or bloodstained vaginal discharge
- Acute illness like vomiting, diarrhoea, or high fever.
MAU is located on the first floor of Liverpool Women's University Hospital.
