The Maternity Assessment Unit at Liverpool Women's University Hospital is a bespoke unit that cares for women who are 18+ gestation

If you are 18+ weeks pregnant or up to six weeks postnatal, please contact the Midwifery Telephone Triage line before attending the Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU).

An experienced midwife will assess your symptoms over the phone and advise you on the most appropriate place to attend, if needed.

If you have any of the symptoms listed below and are unable to speak with a midwife via telephone triage, please attend MAU directly.

  • Reduced or changes to baby movements
  • Sudden, sharp or ongoing abdominal pain
  • Bleeding
  • Labour
  • Spontaneous Rupture of Membranes
  • Acute illness eg high fever/signs of infection/flu like symptoms/difficulty breathing.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact the Midwifery Telephone Triage line for further advice:

  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Severe itching without a rash
  • Sudden swelling of your hands or ankles
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea.

If you are less than 18 weeks, you should attend the Gynaecology Emergency Department (GED) on the Ground Floor.

Attending community hubs

Please do not present at a community hub unless you have an appointment. This is essential for us to provide you with the best care.

Some of our midwifery teams operate from several Community Hubs through pre-arranged appointments and they do not have the capacity or measures in place to provide for any walk in / unplanned patients.
