The Maternity Assessment Unit at Liverpool Women's University Hospital is a bespoke unit that cares for women who are 18+ gestation

Pregnant women who are 18 weeks and beyond should attend the MAU if they experience any of the following:

  • Reduced or changed baby movements
  • Sudden, sharp, or ongoing abdominal pain
  • Bleeding (if 20 weeks or more)
  • Severe itching without a rash
  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Sudden swelling of hands or ankles
  • Smelly or bloodstained vaginal discharge
  • Acute illness like vomiting, diarrhoea, or high fever.

If you are less than 18 weeks, you should attend the Gynaecology Emergency Department (GED) on the Ground Floor.

Attending community hubs

Please do not present at a community hub unless you have an appointment. This is essential for us to provide you with the best care.

Some of our midwifery teams operate from several Community Hubs through pre-arranged appointments and they do not have the capacity or measures in place to provide for any walk in / unplanned patients.
